Strong
Beer Season
Back in the 17th century, monks in a Bavarian monastery came up with
a splendid idea of how to while away the 40 days long, hungry days of
lent. They brewed their beer stronger (“Starkbier”), making
it more nutritous (the official excuse). The alcohol content also rose
to 7 or 8 percent. The monks were entitled to 4 or 5 “Mass”
(litres) of this “Starkbier” every day. Just imagine how hard
it was to maintain their fasting throughout 40 days!
Word soon spread, and the common folk were only too keen to partake
of this seasonal special brew in the bars around the monasteries. Not
surprisingly, this tradition has continued and has been cultivated until
the present day. Every day during lent, all the munich breweries offer
their own “Starkbier”, giving them names such as “Salvator”,
“Triumphator”, “Maximator”…
„On the first day of the “Starkbier“ season it is
tested by the drinkers. How? – you pour a liter of beer on a wooden
bench, you sit on the bench wearing your “lederhosen” (leather
pants) – stand up after a couple of hours sitting and drinking –
the beer is only good if the bench sticks to your Lederhosen!

Auer Dulten / Fair in

April, the “Jakobidult” in July and the “Kirchweihdult”
in October, at Maria-Hilf Platz in the quarter Au. For these days
it says: dawdle and look, eat and drink, enjoy yourself and do some
shopping.
