Munich Surrounds

Bars & Clubs

Of course Munich, like any other big city, has a vast number of bars and clubs. A Munich specialty is the so-called 'disco-halls': former industrial buildings transformed into huge disco-temples. If you just want to meet people and enjoy a quiet drink, the inner-city area of Schwabing is highly recommended. Located just north of the city centre, you will find one bar or club after another.

There are rock and pop concerts every night of the week at various clubs throughout the city. There are a couple of movie theatres in Munich that show the original English language versions and offer a varying daily program. This only goes to show that there are ways to have fun in nighttime Munich that don't involve the Hofbräuhaus or the Oktoberfest. Here is a small selection of the hippest bars and clubs:

City Center / close to EASY PALACE Hostel

Homely, living room ambience in a sixties style with comfy sofas and lava lamps. A relaxed atmosphere (you won't encounter arrogant or unfriendly personnel here!) and an ever changing live music schedule that puts class international acts on the tiny stage for a relatively low cover charge.

Aroma Bar MunichKaffeebar Aroma
A small, off-the-beaten-path coffee lounge featuring a quaint country-style shop within, selling everything from chocolates to unique gifts and vintage items. Their cozy lounge serves fantastic coffee and delicious food specialties, while taking you on a journey back to your childhood. Not found in any typical guidebook, this is definitaly a hidden-gem waiting to be discovered.
Pestalozzistr. 24, +49 (0)89 26 94 92 49 - www.aromakaffeebar.com
Cafe am Hochhaus Munich Cafe am Hochhaus:
Formally operated as a charming coffee bar, Cafe am Hochhaus has transformed into an exceptional lounge with various DJ genres and considerable nightlife appeal. Stylish guests, cool sound and a classy interior. This club is guaranteed to get people talking.

Milchbar Munichmilch und bar
In a 1950s ambience the young and “remaining young” celebrate the night and themselves. It´s a good place to hang out and watch people or just dance, dance dance! Although the Milchbar is spacious it´s getting very crowded after midnight, especially around 4 a.m when all the other clubs are already closing their doors… At Milchbar the party goes on. www.milchundbar.de
Substanz MunichSubstanz
Meeting point for 18 – 35years old people. Regular events: every Tuesday, biweekly, live gigs presented by Munich punk bands. Each month´s first Sunday the poetry slam takes place and every first Thursday of a month there´s the “night of filmlets”.

Ksar Barclub:
Trendiger, chilliger Barclub mit großer Cocktailkarte und coolem Publikum um die 30. Trinken, relaxen und das bunte Treiben draussen auf der Strasse durch die riesigen Schauffenster beobachten!
Müllerstr. 31 - Tel. +49 (0) 89 55 29 84 76 - www.ksar-barclub.de
Hard Rock Café:
Right across from the Hofbräuhaus is the Hard Rock Café Munich. Not surprisingly the atmosphere is similar to the other Hard Rocks you've visited. Burgers are kind of expensive but in general the food and the service is still great; www.hardrock.com
Gap:
The antithesis of the snobby establishments that surround it. The makeshift design, not-quite-white ceilings and badly hung red curtains makes you feel like you are in an old theatre; Goethstraße 34
Master's Home:
Comfy and friendly! Masters Home is designed to look like the interior of an English colonial style house: kind of makes you feel like you're at a private party. All kinds of people go there, although the majority of the crowd does tend to gravitate towards the hip/cool.

Südstadt MunichSüdstadt:
A cosy bar for people between 20 and 35. Südstadt combines the concepts of a counter-meal pub with a club-like atmosphere and features various musical regulars and guest acts. www.suedstadt-muenchen.de
Los Bandidos:
Happy hour is from Sunday to Wednesday between 6 and 9 p.m.: a burger with french-fries and a salad for €5, all sorts of burritos, tacos and nachos starting at €5.50. All in all very tasty, and the cocktails are alright too. Because of the extremely loud party and chart music they play it can be hard to hold a conversation - but isn't that the way in most tex-mex places?

new York Munich New York:
Hip and cool, this gay disco that is also visited by open-minded and trendy members of the heterosexual community. You'll see plenty of gorgeous guys around the club and on the dance floor, and more than a few posers. The area around the bar is the best place to strike up a conversation, but in New York the emphasis is on being seen rather, than heard; www.newyorktabledance.de

Schwabing Munich

Haus der 111 Biere ('The House of 111 Beers'):
The name says it all! You can choose from 111 different beers brewed in 25 different countries, what better reason to try them all in one night! This bar for young and old has been around for 35 years; Franzstraße 8

Prager Frühling MünchenPrager Frühling
A great option in the Schwabinger nightlife – a bar with dancing and a stage for live gigs
– in the old babalu bar in Ainmillerstr. 1
U3/U6 Giselastrasse

Wirtshaus zur Brez'n:

The homey, almost rustic atmosphere helps get visitors in the mood for a hearty, home cooked meal. The menu ranges from various snacks starting at €6 to homemade specialties at €13 - €15. It's not cheap but the food is fantastic and the portions are comparatively big. This place is known not only for its waitresses in dirndls (the traditional Bavarian dresses) but also for its traditional Bavarian breakfasts and numerous special events for various occasions; www.zurbrezn.de

Roxy:
Rather big, well lit, good steaks, breakfast at all hours of the day, good for people watching, the in-crowd meets there; Leopoldstraße 48

elsewhere

Backstage MunichBackstage:
Beloved meeting point of the indie/underground scene. Free entry to the beer garden before 9. www.backstage-online.com
P1 MunichP1:
We think the 'P' probably stands for 'Posh'. P1 is notorious inside and outside Bavaria as Munich's 'place to be seen'. Mostly frequented by the young and successful of the local gastro-set, well-known members of Munich's in-crowd and the occasional VIP brings a breath of fresh air into P1. The interior is very stylish but be prepared for high prices if you manage to make it past the covercharge-free, but very strict, door. With an all-new DJ team P1 stays musically up to date and will no doubt retain its spot at the top of Munich's 'in-club' list for the foreseeable future. www.p1-club.de
Nachtgalerie:
a somewhat off-putting cover charge (€10) is soon forgotten when patrons discover that drinks cost 50 cents!! Augustiner beer costs €1 for a half-litre bottle. At these prices, you can probably imagine the atmosphere in the club. The large hall there's plenty of dancing with the usual beats and partysounds. In the smaller club the DJs lay powerful blackbeat (Friday) and techno/house (Saturday).
